BOOK OF THE DAY:
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Gayle Forman’s If I Stay is already out in theaters, but this compelling novel says more than the trailer and movie. As any seventeen year old, Mia Hall’s life is full of choices she must promptly make. She battles between three of her most valuable loves: her family, her music, and her boyfriend, Adam.
Mia’s life becomes more complicated than originally planned. After a drive with her family, an accident forces Mia’s decisions into a life changing battle. She has no recollection of the tragedy. She watches as her unconscious, injured body is taken away from the tragic wreck. Mia is only able to recall events after the accident.
From tragedy and loss what is most important is revealed to Mia. Her only decision left is the most important and the only one that could affect her destiny: should she stay?
It is not a surprise to us that Forman’s novel, If I Stay, is a huge success for the young adult audience. She reveals:

"My first writing job was at Seventeen, where I spent five years onstaff and as a contributor reporting the magazine’s social-issues stories. I loved writing for teens then because—contrary to popular opinion—they really care about serious issues (from child soldiers in Africa to kids embroiled in the drug war here) and the engage in their reading with such passion. So, now that I’m writing young-adult literature, it feels like I’ve come full circle."

The tale is full of bittersweet memories, which touch your heart at the right moments. The most impressive feature of Forman’s work is the inclusion of music. Forman’s words are lyrical; you feel that you were reading a song.
If you are expecting to read a haunting masterpiece, this is not for you. The novel is written in a teen girl’s voice. It is sweet, young and moving. The story is beautifully told through the eyes of Mia. Forman does an excellent job in personalizing every character, by giving them unique traits and quirks. If I Stay is a powerful execution of love and the meaning we place in those we love, especially family.
